I believe it does show up if there is more than one page in the sub-grid.

I guess the expectation here is that, if there's only one page, you are probably already aware of the total, as sub-grids typically don't show too many records all at once.

I'm still voting for this, because I think it should always be there... but at least you can tell your customer this.
